Northend Hardwoods stocks redwood burl and large planks salvaged from the forests of the pacific northwest.
When the forests were originally being harvested in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, loggers stood on springboards elevated off the forest floor. The lumber companies were interested in harvesting the long, straight grain wood above the burl and root base. Loggers felled old growth redwood starting at 10 – 15 feet off the ground. This method left enormous amounts of curled and highly figured wood laying dormant, where it has remained for the past hundred years.
As the northwest continues to be developed and the land utilized for residential and agricultural purposes, these old stumps are being discoved. This old growth lumber is being extracted and milled. Northend Hardwoods founder David Tanych has traveled through the Coastal Redwood forests and works with the loggers who harvest this generation of lumber. He hand-selects the most distinctive and exciting pieces to be sold in our two Vermont retail locations.
